Columbia University Emergency Medical Service (CU EMS) is a student-operated, New York State-certified, Basic Life Support volunteer ambulance corps.

We provide prehospital emergency medical care, free of charge, to Columbia University's Morningside Heights Campus, and the surrounding area, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Originally known as CAVA (Columbia Area Volunteer Ambulance), we have been serving the Columbia Community since 1968. The corps currently hs approximately 45 active members and responds to over 800 emergency calls per year. Whether you are a Columbia affiliate or merely an interested web surfer, we hope you find this website informative and useful.

Attention applicants interested in membership in CU-EMS! We will be having two information sessions this week:
Tuesday, January 24th, at 9.00 p.m. in 503 Hamilton
Wednesday, January 25th, at 9.00 p.m. in 503 Hamilton

Attendance at one of these interview sessions is mandatory in order to sign up for an interview slot.

Due to the availability of extra spaces in the EMT-B class, CU-EMS is extending the deadline for the sponsorship application to Saturday, December 31th, at 11.59 p.m.! There will be a short interview for late applicants via phone. Applicants will be accepted on a rolling basis.

CU-EMS is extending the deadline for the sponsorship application to Tuesday, December 13th, at 11.59 p.m.! There will be a short interview for all applicants on Wednesday, December 14th, between 2.00 and 3.00 p.m.. Please email cava@columbia.edu if you foresee any conflicts with that time.

Attention to those interested in becoming an EMT-Basic through CU-EMS in the Spring 2012 semester: Columbia University EMS, previously known as CAVA, is planning on holding an EMT-Basic certification course on campus this Spring 2012 for students at Columbia University or affiliated institutions who are interested becoming New York State certified EMT-Basics.

The course will begin on Tuesday, January 10th and run through Thursday, May 17th. Classes will be held near the Columbia University Medical Center, at 711 West 179th Street, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6.00 p.m. – 10.00 p.m..

Columbia University EMS, will be holding an information session on Tuesday, December 6th from 9.00 - 10.00 p.m. in 302 Hamilton.

The executive board of CU-EMS will be present at this sessions to answer any questions you may have regarding the EMT-Basic certification course. Attendance at this information session is mandatory for students who would like to enroll in the certification course or apply for CU-EMS sponsorship of the course for the Spring 2012 semester. If you have a conflict with the information session, please alert the E-Board at cava@columbia.edu.

All applications will be due by 11.59 p.m. on Monday, December 12th. The application can be found on our website.
