Becoming an EMT

On-Campus EMT Course
Columbia University EMS is staffed by New York State-Certified Emergency Medical Technicians and sponsors an on-campus EMT course run by Emergency Care Programs, an EMT training company based out of Brooklyn. The course is held each semester on Columbia University's Morningside Campus.

Course tuition and supplies cost a total of $995.00. Anyone is welcome to pay full tuition and enroll in the course. However, the completion of this course, and subsequent EMT certification, do not guarantee acceptance into CU-EMS.

Classes start in the second or third week of both the fall and spring semesters, as well as in late May for the summer semester. The dates, times, and location of the semester's EMT course are announced at an information session held at the beginning of each fall, spring, and summer semester. All those interested in the on-campus EMT course should attend the information session.

Course Sponsorship for On-Campus EMT Course
Only full-time students at Columbia University or an affiliated institution are eligible to apply for CU EMS sponsorship of the EMT-Basic course. Those who wish to apply will need to print and fill out the application below. Interview sign-up will be done at an information session during the semester or via an e-mail from the Personnel Officer.

The executive board will be reviewing applications and interviewing applicants during the final weeks of semester immediately prior to the one in which the course will take place. (i.e. applicants for the Spring 2011 course will be reviewed and interviewed in December of the Fall 2010 semester.) No more than 8-9 selected students will be granted sponsorship each semester.

For those students who receive sponsorship, the EMT-Basic certification course will be provided at a reduced tuition cost; however course sponsorship does not guarantee acceptance into CU-EMS after EMT certification.

In order to qualify for course sponsorship, students must:

  1. Be a full-time student at Columbia University, Barnard, or one of its affiliate institutions
  2. 2. Complete the necessary hours and assignments to successfully meet course requirements as directed by Emergency Care Programs, Inc.
  3. Pass both the New York State EMT-B Written Exam and Practical Skills Exam, thereby becoming a certified EMT-B
  4. Submit a copy of EMT-B certification card to Columbia University EMS upon receipt of card in the mail
  5. Apply to interview to volunteer with Columbia University EMS in the semester following the completion of the course
  6. Continue as a full-time student for at least 2 years after completing the course.
Those who fail to meet the above requirements at any point before, during, or after completion of the course forfeit their sponsorship and will be held responsible for paying the full price of the course.

Reciprocity for Non–New York State EMTs
If you are an EMT from a state other than New York and would like information about obtaining reciprocity, please contact the Executive Board or see the New York EMT Reciprocity Information page from the New York State Department of Health website.
